Call for Manuscripts: Contemporary Whitehead Studies (August 1, 2011)
The Whitehead Research Project is seeking scholarly contributions to its book series, Contemporary Whitehead Studies, published by Lexington Books, an imprint of Rowman & Littlefield. The series will explore original and innovative approaches connecting the work of A. N. Whitehead to contemporary philosophies and current questions across the humanities and around the world. CWS especially seeks projects that:

  • explore the connections between Whitehead and contemporary Continental philosophy,
  • reconnect Whitehead to pragmatism, analytical philosophy and philosophy of language,
  • explore creative East/West dialogues facilitated by Whitehead's work,
  • explore the interconnections of the mathematician with the philosopher and the contemporary importance of these parts of Whitehead's work for the dialogue between sciences and humanities,
  • reconnect Whitehead to the wider field of philosophy, the humanities, the sciences and academic research with Whitehead's pluralistic impulses in the context of a pluralistic world,
  • address Whitehead's philosophy in the midst of contemporary problems facing humanity, such as climate change, war & peace, race, and the future development of civilization.

Fifth International Conference (April 1, 2011)
The Whitehead Research Project announces its Fifth International Conference, entitled "Whitehead: The Next Generation," to be held in Claremont, California, at Claremont Graduate University on December 1-3, 2011. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alfred North Whitehead, the Whitehead Research Project will gather emerging Whitehead scholars both from Claremont and from the international community to present the burgeoning work of the next generation of Whiteheadian thought. This conference will be quite transdisciplinary in nature, as it embraces the variety of approaches taken by these young thinkers. In true Whiteheadian fashion, the conference seeks not to highlight a single focus for the future of Whitehead scholarship, but rather it aims at uncovering multiple trajectories through which the influence of Whitehead will carry us into the future.

Faber to Speak at the Library of Congress (January 29, 2011)
Professor Roland Faber, Kilsby Family/John B. Cobb Jr. Professor of Process Studies, has been invited to lecture at the Library of Congress on February 17. This keynote address, given to the larger public, will invite better appreciation of the thought and intellectual legacy of Alfred North Whitehead as an important philosopher, physicist, and mathematician. The lecture will be given in conjunction with a symposium of the Manuscript Division and the John W. Kluge Center of the Library of Congress in recognition of a gift to the Library of Congress of a letter by Whitehead's student and research assistant, Henry Leonard of Harvard, which has been donated to the Library by Dr. Leonard's son.

Death of Reiner Wiehl (January 24, 2011)
The Whitehead Research Project sadly reports the death of Reiner Wiehl, philosopher and Whitehead expert at the University of Heidelberg. Professor Wiehl died on December 30, 2010, at the age of 81. He served as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Heidelberg since 1976, where lectured and wrote on Kant, Whitehead, and existentialism. Together with Friedrich Rapp, he co-edited the volume Whitehead's Metaphysics of Creativity. As one of the foremost European Whitehead experts, Professor Wiehl will be greatly missed.
